DIY Designer Totes

While perusing Instagram, I noticed that @kourtneykardash (yes, I follow all Kardashians on Instagram) purchased a pair of canvas grocery bags with a designer handbag graphic. They were adorable and available online for $35+.

Instead of giving into my usual impulse buying ways, I decided to try and make my own version of the totes with plain canvas bags and Sharpie fabric pens. I was very happy with the results!

What you need:

  • Canvas bag
  • Fabric pens
  • Ruler
  • Image of designer bag

The steps are simple. Search online for a bag that you would like to feature on your tote (above: Balenciaga Motorcycle bag, Hermès Birkin and Hermès Kelly) and draw the design onto the canvas. Many of you may think the drawing part is difficult, but most bags I found don’t involve a lot of intricate design. Mostly boxy, rectangular shapes! Use a ruler to provide smooth, straight edge lines and don’t worry if the bag is a little off…it is your own unique hand-drawn masterpiece!

When coloring in the bags, I lightly shaded in with the Sharpie making sure not to press too hard and lose valuable fabric  ink! I feel the effect still looks great.

I was asked to make some of these canvas totes for friends who seemed to prefer the customization of having the bags hand drawn and not one of a mass production of designs. If you’re uncertain about freely drawing directly on the bag, try sketching out your design separately on a piece of paper first.

Canvas bags are great as reusable grocery bags, beach bags or just every day totes. Happy crafting!
